OUR STORY

In Nunavik, overpopulation, the housing shortage, vandalism and inadequate home & equipment maintenance are a huge burden for the Kativik Municipal Housing Bureau (KMHB).

It costs the Quebec government $40 million a year to maintain homes and extend their useful life. Few millions go to repair damage caused by vandalism to KMHB homes and equipment.

The need to raise tenant awareness and get young people to reflect on the direct advantages of living in a sound, well-maintained and safe environment, has become a top priority alongside solving the housing shortage.

In November 2011, the KMHB, with the liberal collaboration of the Société d’habitation du Québec (SHQ), inaugurated the Pivallianiq initiative. Pivallianiq is an Inuktitut word meaning a change for the better. Implemented in Nunavik's 14 communities, this informative, action-oriented sensitization program comprises three components aimed at maintaining homes and equipment, fighting vandalism by raising awareness among the youth, and achieving the overall beautification of the living environments of the Nunavimmiut.

Pivallianiq is the pact for better living in Nunavik.

OUR MISSION

By raising awareness and appealing to aboriginal pride, start up a full-scale social movement to beautify and preserve the homes and communities of Nunavik.

OUR VISION

Through an informative sensitization campaign for families and by equipping the younger generation with know-how, unproductive expenses can be avoided. By addressing inadequate home and equipment maintenance, water and energy resource waste and vandalism, the savings could be redirected to building additional housing units in Nunavik's social housing developments.

OUR VALUES

COMMIT to making individual acts in each of our communities that will start up a true collective movement to beautify Nunavik.

Take RESPONSIBILITY as a tenant by respecting the property entrusted by the KMHB, maintaining it and diligently paying the rent.

CONSERVE our water and energy resources and our fragile northern environment.

RESPECT people and property and above all the upcoming generations who will inherit the homes, equipment and fine habits developed by their predecessors.

TRANSFER knowledge, experience and maintenance habits to our children and our entourage in order to …

PERPETUATE the Pact for Better Living in Nunavik.
